The ESF in Luxembourg

Luxembourg is focusing on tackling unemployment, especially among young people, by improving jobseekers’ skills and qualifications and better equipping them for the labour market. It is also giving support to the social economy by combatting poverty and helping disadvantaged minorities to integrate into society.

Across Europe and in Luxembourg the ESF is supporting jobs, helping people get better jobs and ensuring fairer living standards and job opportunities for all EU citizens. It is doing this by investing in Europe’s human capital – its workers, its young people, disadvantaged groups and all those seeking a job. Tens of thousands of ESF projects are active in Europe’s cities, towns, rural communities and neighbourhoods. They are opening doors to skills, to work, to qualifications and to a more inclusive society for all Europeans.

The Luxembourg ESF programme is prioritising employment and inclusion, and targeting the integration of young people in the job market by improving the implementation and monitoring of the Youth Employment Initiative.

Raising standards and services

In a sustained effort to address unemployment and meet the demands of a changing labour market, the ESF is investing in raising the level of skills and qualifications among Luxembourg’s workforce and those seeking employment. Special attention is being paid to promoting quality jobs and supporting labour mobility among those aged over 45, young people, and jobseekers from immigrant backgrounds. For example, the ESF co-funded Youth4Work project is helping young people to reintegrate into education or to find apprenticeships or jobs through coaching, training and working closely with local businesses.

Overall, by reducing unemployment, ESF measures are helping to reinforce social cohesion and inclusion, particularly among the country’s most disadvantaged groups. Similarly, concrete efforts to combat poverty and discrimination are improving access to services in Luxembourg and supporting the social economy.

Reinforcing skills and learning

To enhance the knowledge and skills of workers and jobseekers in Luxembourg, the country is investing in education, training, lifelong learning and vocational training. The aim is to better match the qualifications and skills of young people and those over 45 with the changing needs of the labour market, and to improve the rate of employment among women and older people. These measures are also expected to increase the numbers of those completing tertiary or the equivalent education thereby improving both their qualifications and the opportunities available to them in the labour market.
