The ESF in Estonia

In Estonia, the ESF is creating new opportunities for workers by offering them new skills and know-how through training and lifelong learning. It is also helping excluded groups join the workforce – such as the long-term unemployed and older job-seekers. And ESF funding is helping educate and train young people to meet the future needs of Estonia’s evolving jobs market.

More jobs for more workers

ESF projects are focusing on getting more people into work. For example, sharing employment costs with companies that take on and train new workers and young people is helping many thousands of unemployed Estonians back to work. Other activities include encouraging young vocational training drop-outs to complete their education and improve their job prospects. The ESF is also helping specific, disadvantaged groups to get jobs or stay in work – for example, through childcare support for families with disabled children, which helps the breadwinners stay in work. And for the first time, children with special educational needs have tailored teaching materials to boost their learning, keep them in school, and give them better chances in the job market. And young people seeking their first job are being helped, such as through the Estonian internet portal where they can collect their qualifications and work experiences in one place – a virtual CV widely available to employers.

Better jobs and new skills

Lifelong learning is a key to better jobs and career development in Estonia – so ESF projects are creating the training materials and qualification systems it needs. Some 12% of adults in Estonia are taking part in ongoing learning to improve their job prospects – twice as many as in earlier years. The ESF is also boosting Estonia’s R&D and higher education systems – to support job creation and help develop key sectors such as biotechnology and information technologies.

Innovation is being given a boost by the Creative Estonia programme which brings artists and businesses together to find new designs and fresh approaches. In addition, by funding external business experts, the ESF has helped companies improve production management and boost productivity by up to 50% in some cases. And in a successful business-mentoring project for new entrepreneurs, over 90% of them increased their sales while 70% boosted profits. Other projects are supporting women entrepreneurs, with training and mentoring to encourage their business ideas and aspirations.
