The ESF in Cyprus

Cyprus is using ESF funding to create job opportunities and boost employment, in particular amongst its young people. Other priorities include measures to improve social inclusion and a better-performing education and training system.

Across Europe and in Cyprus the ESF is supporting jobs, helping people get better jobs and ensuring fairer living standards and job opportunities for all EU citizens. It is doing this by investing in Europe’s human capital – its workers, its young people, disadvantaged groups and all those seeking a job. Tens of thousands of ESF projects are active in Europe’s cities, towns, rural communities and neighbourhoods. They are opening doors to skills, to work, to qualifications and to a more inclusive society for all Europeans.

Boosting employment

Over half of ESF investments in Cyprus are dedicated to projects providing more – and better – employment opportunities for jobseekers. Young people are a particular focus, for example with projects supporting the transition into work through job placements and apprenticeships. The ESF is also promoting lifelong learning as a way for those in work to upgrade their skills and learn new ones.

Supporting social cohesion

Cyprus is combating social exclusion and poverty among vulnerable social groups. ESF projects are helping disadvantaged people, such as those with disabilities, women, welfare recipients and migrants, to join the workforce and enjoy independent lives. Employers are helping in this effort and can receive subsidies when offering work to disadvantaged jobseekers. Social enterprises are receiving support as a means of achieving social cohesion and employment. Cyprus is also implementing measures supporting a minimum guaranteed income to provide a social safety net for those at risk of poverty.

Improving educational opportunities

Measures are underway to improve the vocational education and training system and the opportunities it offers, including better matching of people’s skills and qualifications with labour market needs. Further reductions in the number of early school-leavers are also targeted in order to ensure young people have the qualifications demanded of a modern workforce.
