Smart Pricing and Drought Insurance Schemes in Mediterranean Countries

Description

The Action Group aims at establishing and implementing a methodology on "Smart Pricing and Drought Insurance Schemes in Mediterranean Countries". The methodology will be based on improved analysis (DPSIR), data and (water management and risk assessment) models to reduce and mitigate drought impacts, by managerial and behavioural change and appropriate economic instruments for increased water security. The Action Group involves different perspectives, such as insurance, water pricing  for re-used wastewater, and water trading.
The implement phase will test the data sources and possible ways of improving and sharing them (e.g. via a common system under SEEA-W), and the analytical models and to validate the application.

Renewable Energy Desalination (RE-Desalination)

Description

The Action Group will promote the use of desalination powered by renewable energy, as an environmentally friendly and decentralised solution for sustainable water supply.
The implementation of RE-Desalination faces several technological, economical, social and institutional barriers that will be addressed in this Action Group.
The Action Group will coordinate and promote research, development and innovation on RE-Desalination, in order to support the development and commercialization of RE-Desalination products at concrete sites. Furthermore, the Action Group will address awareness raising & training and demonstrate market potential, in an international context. The promotion of legal structures and policies will be investigated to facilitate and drive deployment.

AG Name

W4EF: Framework for evaluation and reporting of the energy impacts on water

Description

The main objective of this Action Group is to produce an adapted framework for energy companies in order to assess their water use and water impacts.
The Action Group will develop a comprehensive approach to the water footprint of energy production. It will allow differentiating between water withdrawal, water consumption and net water consumption, and calculating different kinds of interactions between the activity and its water environment.
The underlying project assumption is that existing frameworks and initiatives do not fulfil the need of the energy sector.
After agreement on the framework and its validation, a tool will be developed to help implement the methodology in a consistent way and ensure wide dissemination across the European energy industry and beyond.

Anaerobic membrane Bioreactor for Recovery of Energy and Resources

Description

The Action Group aims to develop an anaerobic membrane reactor to maximize resource recover through an alternative wastewater treatment based on AnMBR technology. Through a multidisciplinary scientific and industrial composition, the Action Group will achieve successful integration into a new design for a sustainable and economic wastewater treatment. It will offer new marketable wastewater treatment solutions.

CITY BLUEPRINTS: Improving Implementation Capacities of Cities and Regions

Description

The Action Group will organize interventions at the local level to overcome barriers in the governance systems that hinder the development and uptake of innovations. More transparent governance and communication on urban water management options and technologies will enable a more rapid introduction of state-of-the-art technologies and will further improve the involvement of the civil society and the private sector in cities and would strengthen the collaboration between cities.
The Action Group will establish a network (learning alliance) of European cities to share their best practices on Urban Water Cycle Services (UWCS) in their effort for a transition towards improving the sustainability of the UWCS of their city/municipality/region. Innovation in water governance may enable and accelerate the application of state-of-the-art UWCS technology. In addition, the Action Group will drive bringing innovative models of water governance, aligned with technical innovations, to the market.

Description

The 'WaterCoRe Action Group on regional governance of water scarcity and drought issues centres around the implementation of Regional Action Plans that are intended to improve water governance in practice, with a focus on connecting institutions in different domains and on different levels of scale (multilevel governance). The Action Group supports creating a sense of urgency and drivers for change (leadership), design and implementation of new arrangements for cooperation (including public-private partnerships and business opportunities) and will provide a knowledge exchange and best practices network, consisting of administrations and other representatives of seven European regions.

Industrial Water Re-use and Recycling

Description

The objective of this Action Group is to develop new methodologies for industrial water re-use and recycling and with the aid of these new methodologies, develop and implement (local) innovative technical, social- and environmental solutions.
All types of sources for industrial water re-use: industrial, urban, agriculture and ecosystems (wetlands) will be considered. New regional concepts will be discussed to come to robust and sustainable water regions in relation to industry. New arrangements and stakeholder involvement methodologies fit for finding and consolidating new cooperation forms between various local partners will be included, as well as technological and non-tech solutions.

ESE - Ecosystem Services for Europe

Description

The Action Group aims to develop a consensual and agreed methodology to assess the tangible and intangible benefits from natural and constructed ecosystems in environment and monetary terms. This methodology will be tested, adapted and implemented in a range of European and non-European demo sites as European, national and local (RTD) projects.
Expected is the development of a unique set of economic indicators (in monetary values), allowing economic comparisons among diverse areas and different scenarios.
The main issues to be included are: - Ecosystem functions allocation, biophysical processes understanding, natural microbial communities, water resources to guaranty the ecosystem functions and ES; - Local studies on wetlands and paddy fields, buffer zones; - Good agriculture practices, sustainable architecture, global warming effects and energy aspects related to ES; - Sustainable use of storm waters and groundwater use, and drainage in cities; and - Tariff and business models, stakeholder´s perception, economic effectiveness of the ES.
Market opportunities will be especially centred on the creation of new SMEs to carry out the alternative water management techniques based on the new methodology, as well as the implementation of new ICT devices that could easily measure the biologic and environmental status of water bodies.
