Reporting on implementation of waste legislation

Member States have various reporting obligations concerning implementation of waste legislation. Two main types of reports include:

  • Annual (or bi-annual) reporting on the achievement of various targets for waste collection, re-use, recycling and / or recovery. These reports cover waste streams such as packaging waste, waste electrical and electronic equipment, and end-of-life vehicles, and will soon cover waste batteries and accumulators, household and similar waste, and construction & demolition waste. These reports are sent directly to Eurostat, typically 18 months after the end of the given reporting period. A summary of the results for years 2006 and 2007 can be found in the Commission's Flash Report. All data are published by Eurostat here.
  • Three-annual Implementation Reports. These reports are based on questionnaires established in Commission Decisions together with the Member States (see list below), and cover the main aspects of implementation of waste legislation. Based on information reported by the Member States, the Commission prepares its own Implementation Report summarising the state of implementation of waste legislation in the EU (see reports below). Reports on implementation of the Waste Shipment Regulation are prepared separately and can also be found here.
