Community activities in the urban environment

The list below sets out the important documents prepared by the European Commission and the EU Expert Group on the Urban Environment that affect urban environment issues as a whole.

European Common Indicators - Development, Refinement, Management and Evaluation Final Report (2003) (pdf~100K)
  		Report on the European Common Indicator initiative which includes comparative data collected on the 10 indicators collected by towns and cities as part of the initiative. New towns and cities can join the initiative and access further information on the ECI, including the methodology sheets here.

6th Environment Action Programme

The Community's 10 action plan for the environment. Article 7(h) requires the preparation of a Thematic Strategy on the Urban Environment.

Advisory Report by EU Expert Group on the Urban Environment to the European Commission

Sustainable Cities Project (Launched 1993)

The main aims of the project were to:

  • promote new ideas on sustainability in European urban settings;
  • foster a wide exchange of experience;
  • disseminate good practices on sustainability at the urban level;
  • formulate recommendations for the EU institutions, national, regional and local authorities;
  • to assist the implementation of the European Community's Fifth Environmental Action Programme.

Fifth Environment Action Programme (1993)

The 5th Environment Action Programme set out actions to meet the targets set for the priority themes in areas such as air quality management, municipal waste incineration and waste water treatment. Developments in these and four of the key target sectors of transport, tourism, energy and industry have a significant impact on the quality of the urban environment.

'Europe's Environment ' 'The Dobris Assessment' (European Environment Agency)

Contains a detailed analysis of the state of the environment in Europe's urban areas.

EC Expert Group on the Urban Environment Established in 1991

The Group was set up in 1991 through a resolution of the Council of Ministers to take forward the core ideas in the 1990 Green Paper on the Urban Environment (91/C 33/02 (pdf~135K)).
