Thematic Strategy on the Urban Environment - 2004 Expert Working Groups

To discuss and develop some of the key ideas set out in the Communication "Towards a Thematic Strategy on the Urban Environment" (11 February 2004) expert technical working groups were established following its adoption. The working groups considered the technical issues associated with the idea in the Communication for an obligation for Europe's largest cities to adopt and implement environmental management plans and management systems, and also to adopt sustainable urban transport plans. In addition, since research and training was highlighted as a key issue in the Communication, a third working group was established to identify priorities in these areas.

The membership of each group was discussed with the EU Expert Group on the Urban Environment and was based on nominations from stakeholders and those made through the website. Each working group met 4 times in 2004 and all reports are made available below.
