Consumers choice – Ecolabelling

EU EcolabelThe EU Ecolabel is a voluntary scheme designed to encourage businesses to market products and services that are more environmentally friendly. It enables consumers to easily identify greener products by a universal label – a flower.

The new Regulation on the EU Ecolabel contains specific measures to encourage small and medium sized enterprises to take part in the scheme, e.g. reduced fees (with special fees for micro enterprises), consultation procedures open to SMEs, testing and verification requirements adapted to SMEs' capabilities.

The revised 2010 regulation of the European Ecolabel has resulted in several SME-friendly provisions:

  • Reduced fees for SMEs and microenterprises in comparison with previous annual fees which could reach as high as 25 000 EUR, independently of business size. Current fees:

    Application costs: 600/350 EUR
    Annual fees: 700/350 EUR

  • Simplified criteria and speedier system
  • Tighter relationship with Green Public Procurement and eco-design
