New report proposes development of sustainable operational waste programmes
A new report from the Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) Bankwatch Network is calling for the linking of the European Waste Framework Directive and the new Cohesion Policy Regulation. The environmental non-governmental organisation (NGO) argues that many countries lag behind EU standards and targets and says that EU funds should prioritise reuse and recycling rather than incineration and landfill. The NGO monitors the activities of international financial institutions in central and eastern Europe and promotes environmentally, socially and economically sustainable alternatives to their policies and projects. Its new study advocates the importance of investment in the waste sector, which represents a key environmental issue and also a potential major source for green jobs in Europe.
In its report, the Network argues that European Cohesion Funds should give priority to waste management activities, which are higher up the waste hierarchy. It sets out evidence and guidelines for the development of sustainable Operational Programmes in EU Member States in the waste management sector, arguing that a smart design of certain policies can drive the European Union towards a more sustainable future.
