The 6th annual edition of the Awards attracted a record entry of 149 applications, with 27 highly commended finalists. Projects were chosen because they represented attractive and inspiring opportunities that could be replicated in other regions. Awards were given in five categories: SMART GROWTH: Connecting universities to regional growth; SUSTAINABLE GROWTH: Supporting resource efficiency in SMEs; INCLUSIVE GROWTH: Social innovation: creative responses to societal challenges; CITYSTAR: Integrated responses to societal challenges; and INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION: promoting EU Regional policy with short video.
The 2013 Award for ‘SUSTAINABLE GROWTH: Supporting resource efficiency in SMEs’ was given to ENWORKS, a UK environmental advice and support service. Since 2007, with co-financing from the European Regional Development Fund, ENWORKS has advised 4 000 small businesses, helping them to make annual savings of more than €16 million through resource efficiency, cutting 34 000 tonnes of CO2 emissions a year, and creating or saving 967 jobs.
The application process for the 2014 RegioStars Awards is now open until 19 April 2013. Each year the categories are changed to allow a new mix of projects to be nominated. Categories relevant to resource efficiency for the 2014 RegioStars Awards include 'SUSTAINABLE GROWTH: Green growth and jobs through Bio-economy' and 'MAJOR INVESTMENT PROJECTS: Energy efficiency and the low carbon economy'.
