The European Commission hosted the European Innovation Partnership (EIP) conference ‘Smart Cities and Communities: Leading the Way in Making Europe’s Cities Smarter’ in Brussels on 26 November 2013. Participants included city leaders, CEOs and civil society leaders who met to discuss how to implement the actions outlined in the Smart Cities Strategic Implementation Plan (SIP). The EIP in Smart Cities and Communities prioritises areas where information and communications technology (ICT), energy and mobility overlap. Recognising that European cities and regions have similar needs, the activity will identify the most effective, common approaches and solutions with a focus on Sustainable Urban Mobility, Sustainable Districts and Built Environment and Integrated Infrastructures and processes. The Partnership provides a forum in which participants can identify, develop and implement innovative solutions.
At the 26 November conference, the Commission announced an ‘invitation for commitments’ with the expectation that it will give added value to the committing parties through increased European visibility, an opportunity to work with other parties on similar themes and a chance to create investment programmes.
This action should lead to the deployment of Smart city solutions that achieve a better quality of life, more competitive industry and SMEs, and more sustainable energy, transport and ICT systems and infrastructures. The Commission will also ensure that the EIP's work will be allied with current and future work to improve conditions in regulation, standardisation and evaluation/ progress monitoring.
To accelerate the progress and implementation of smart cities solutions, the Commission intends to make approximately EUR 200 million available from the 2014-2015 budgets of the Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme
