A Green Economy within the Limits of Our Planet

10 October 2012: Brussels, Belgium

The Belgium-based global magazine, MO*, and the cultural organisation, Vlaams-Nederlands Huis deBuren, are hosting a lecture on ‘A Green Economy within the Limits of Our Planet’, which will explore the advantages and disadvantages of using ‘green accounting’ for sustainable growth. The lecture is being given by Professor Jacqueline McGlade, the Director of the European Environment Agency in Copenhagen, and Dr Joachim Spangenberg, Vice Chair of the Sustainable Europe Research Institute in Cologne.

Professor McGlade believes that governments should base a green economy on a systematic accounting of the use our lives and economies make of ecosystems and natural resources. Dr Spangenberg is a critic of this approach, arguing that when everything is priced and the market is used as the mechanism to solve problems, it does not take into account the intrinsic value of biodiversity and nature.
