Efficiency in land and soil management is one of the main challenges facing society. It was identified as a theme in the 2011 Roadmap to a Resource Efficient Europe and taken up in the European Union's new Environment Action Programme to 2020. The Commission is working on a Communication on ‘Land as a resource’. It is hoped that the debate generated at this conference will provide useful insight into the development of the Communication.
Janez Potočnik, Environment Commissioner, will open the conference and the keynote speech will be delivered by Lester E Brown, Director of the Earth Policy Institute (Washington DC). The programme has three sessions 1) What are the issues at stake? 2) National and regional experiences and 3) Exploring possible EU answers.
There will be a panel discussion chaired by Environment DG, Director-General, Karl Falkenberg. The conference will be concluded with an evening cocktail reception.
Participation in the conference is free, but will be limited to 400 people. Interpretation will, in principle, be provided in Bulgarian, Czech, English, French, German, Greek, Italian, Polish, Romanian and Spanish. The conference will be web-streamed live and links to the service will be posted on the website when available.
