The 13th International Electronics Recycling Congress (IERC) will be taking place from January 22 to 24, 2014 in Salzburg, Austria. IERC is the international platform for developments relating to worldwide Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE). The three day programme includes sessions on implementing the recast WEEE Directive published in July 2012 (‘WEEE 2’); standards impacting recyclers; batteries from WEEE – take back and recycling; challenges with hazardous components; critical materials recovery; and best recycling technologies. Additionally, there will be commercial presentations focusing on recycling technology, discussing technology solutions and equipment providers.
The event’s guest speaker is Dr Bertrand Piccard, psychiatrist, balloonist and Chairman of the Solar Impulse Project. Dr Piccard will be discussing the topic ‘Pioneering spirit for inventing the future’.
Congress participants have the opportunity to visit plants operated by some of Europe’s leading recycling companies. Included in the tour programme are visits to a copper smelter; an electronics recycling plant; a metal scrap and sorting yard; a plastics recycling plant and a facility producing plastic recycling machines.
Maria Banti, DG Environment Policy Officer for the European Commission will be providing one of the key addresses: ‘The challenges in the implementation of the new WEEE Directive’.
There will be an exhibition area and poster presentations providing participants with an opportunity to network.
