European Natura 2000 Award
European Commissioner for the Environment, Janez Potočnik and all jury members with the Natura 2000 Award winners.
The Natura 2000 Award Ceremony took place at the European Commission’s Berlaymont Building in Brussels on 21 May 2014, when the five winning projects received the recognition they deserved from the entire European nature conservation community.
European Commissioner Janez Potočnik presented the awards, joined by the five jury members and other leading nature conservation experts.
“Natura 2000 is an example of the added value of the EU, reflecting unique cooperation among all 28 Member States,” said Commissioner Potočnik. “We should all feel like winners tonight, as when nature is protected, we all benefit.”
Tension was high right up until the last minute, as none of the 22 finalists knew beforehand who would step up to take the prizes in the five award categories. The ceremony was a tribute to the hard work and dedication that goes into managing Natura 2000 sites across Europe, and offered inspiration and an excellent networking opportunity for all those taking part.
“This event has been a great success, and really shown that with nature, Europe is close to people,” concluded the Director General of the European Commission’s DG Environment, Karl Falkenberg.
