Description

Medium-sized bird (L 40 cm), identified by its black and white plumage, upcurved bill and blue long legs. Avocets inhabits marshes and lagoons, mostly saline. The nest is usually on the ground among the vegetation and close to the water's edge. Feed on aquatic invertebrates. Migrant although there is a large wintering popualtion in EU.

Reasons for the need for protection/inclusion in annex I

The major threats for the species are the destruction of feeding, breeding and wintering habitats due to drainage or deterioration of saline or brackish wetlands. Disturbances at breeding sites and illegal hunting may be a problem.
