Small bird (L 35 cm), in breeding plumage has horn-like golden tufts, neck and flanks are chestnut. Breeds on freshwater lakes and ponds with densely vegetated margins, also in sea bays. Winters mostly on sheltered coasts and estuaries. Feeds on aquatic insects, molluscs, tadpoles. Migrant.
Reasons for the need for protection/inclusion in annex I
The major threats for the species are deterioration of habitat and disturbance from fishers, photographers and tourists. Fluctuations in water-levels and egg-collecting have a negative impact in reproductive success.
