Description
Medium-sized eagle (L 50 cm) and big width. No other raptor shows so pronounced contrast between dark above and white bellow. The Osprey breeds along coasts and in forest habitats close to fresh and salt water with sufficient fish supplies. Migrant.
Reasons for the need for protection/inclusion in annex I
The species is rare in the EU. The Osprey has been declining for over a century, although recently some recovery has been reported. In the past shooting and nest destruction were the main threats to this species. Today, shooting still occurs, but habitat destruction and contamination with organochlorines are the major threats.
