Description

It is the only Anatidae in Europe that do not differs in colour neither in speculum between sexes. Medium-sized duck (L 40 cm). Breeding is tipically in shallow, fresh to brackish, wetlands with extensive vegetation. Such sites are often very small. The species often winters on temporary wetlands without emergent vegetation. Migrant.

Watercolour by Serge Nicolle

Reasons for the need for protection/inclusion in annex I

The Marbled Ducks were once one of the most aboundant duks in the Marismas del Guadalquivir. Now numbers are not over 250 pairs in good climatic conditions. The causes of the decline are uncertain but probably relate to habitat loss, pollution and illegal hunting.
