Lagopus mutus pyrenaicus

Partridge (L 35 cm) of high mountainous region. Plumage changes through the year. The subspecies inhabits zones at altitudes up to 2,000 m, between the treeline and the snowline, but often into snow. In harsh winters, birds are forced down. Feed on seeds and insects. Resident.

Reasons for the need for protection/inclusion in annex I
This subspecies is endemic of Spain and France. Developments linked to the tourist industry in mountainous areas ledding to habitat destruction by opening up tracks, footpath, ski stations and to disturbances and illegal hunting are serious threats.
