Size and plumage colour as L. m. pyrenaicus. The subspecies occurs on meadows of high mountainous areas, around snow line, utilizing gravelly slopes. The diet consists of berries, leaf buds and insects. Resident.

Reasons for the need for protection/inclusion in annex I
This subspecies is endemic of the Alps and is mainly threatened by overhunting and human disturbance during breeding season.
