Spur-winged Plover

Description
Like a pigeon in size (L 26 cm), shows a contrasted black and white plumage with a small crest and a spur on elbow. Open areas close to brackish or freshwater are preferred. The species feed mainly on insects and other small animals, captured in soft sand. Resident.

Reasons for the need for protection/inclusion in annex I
The species is endangered whitin the EU, its breeding population is unlikely to exceed 50 pairs. The main threat troughout the European range is loss of natural and semi-natural wetlands, especially marshes. Eggs and chicks predation and tourist activities are additional problems.
