Black-throated Diver
Gavia arctica

Description
Medium sized bird (L 65 cm). In the breeding season shows striking black and white pattern on breast and flanks, crown and nape grey, bill and neck black. Winter plumage is uniform. The main breeding habitat is freshwater lakes with small islands. Fish are the predominant food. The species is migratory.

Reasons for the need for protection/inclusion in annex I
Even if the European range remains stable, a recent decline in breeding population size have been suggested for several countries, including Finland. Studies have demostrated a low reproductive rate, perphaps insufficient to compensate for adult mortality. Threats at breeding lakes include disturbance and high levels of mercury on eggs.
