White heron (L 55 cm), with blacker legs and bill. In breeding plumage, has long nape plumes. Occurs relatively commonly at shallow lakes, ponds and river deltas but also at saltpans and lagoons on coast. Nesting is in mixed colonies with other herons. The diet consists minly of fish and amphibians. Migrant.
Reasons for the need for protection/inclusion in annex I
The breeding population appears to be stable. The loss and deterioration of habitats due to drainage and to agricultural and development projects are the major threats that the species is now facing.
