Medium-sized woodpecker (L 22 cm), differs from other "pied" woodpecker in lack of black stripe in face which leads to a whiter appearance. Common in woodland, around clumps of trees, parks, gardens, cultivated country and nearby settlements. Feeds on insects. Resident.

Deterioration of habitat and loss of diversity are probably the major threats.
