Description

Medium-sized woodpecker (L 22 cm). Occurs mainly in old pine forest with Pinus canariensis, but is also encountered in almond groves and other fruit stands nearby forest edge. Feeds on insects. resident.

Reasons for the need for protection/inclusion in annex I

This subspecies is endemic to Gran Canaria Island. Its breeding popuñation is unlikely to exceed 250 pairs. The reduction of its habitat, intensive forestry and illegal hunting are the major threats.
