Description

Medium-sized duck (L 40 cm). Looks very dark, chestnut-coloured with bright white undertail-coverts. The breeding range of the Ferruginous Duck comprises large river deltas, the steppe and lakes of Eurasia. The main breeding habitats are shallow water-bodies, fresh, caracterized by a dense vegetation and a rich fauna. Mainly waterplant material is eaten. Migrant.

Reasons for the need for protection/inclusion in annex I

The main threat to this species is the widespread destruction of wetland through most of its range. Illegal hunting is a serious problem at the local level in some palces.
