Description

Slightly bigger (L 40 cm) than Barn Owl (Tyto alba), with characteristic heavily blotched plumage and deep black eye surrounds. Breeds in large open areas, treeless and wetlands. During migration, birds occurs mainly on fields. Feeds chiefly on small rodents. Migrant.

Reasons for the need for protection/inclusion in annex I

Even if its presence is in many respects dependent on food availability, this owl has declined markedly in parts of eastern Europe due to loss of habitat through agricultural intensification and afforestation as well as disturbances at breeding sites.
