Bird species of Annex I of the Birds Directive

Whereas the Birds Directive protects all wild bird species in the European Union it requires special conservation measures to be taken for the habitat of species listed in Annex I of the directive.

Annex I of the Birds Directive lists 192 species and sub-species It is comprised of:

  • species in danger of extinction;

  • species vulnerable to specific changes in their habitat;

  • species considered rare because of small populations or restricted local distribution;

  • other species requiring particular attention for reasons of the specific nature of habitat.

For these species Member States have a particular duty to classify their most suitable territories in number and size as Special Protection Areas.

This guide is intended to provide you with an introduction to each of the Annex I bird species. It includes a species description and illustrations, a distribution map as well as information on major threats to the species.
