Wild Birds: Threatened Birds
Bird species of Annex I of the Birds Directive
Whereas the Birds Directive protects all wild bird species
in the European Union it requires special conservation measures
to be taken for the habitat of species listed in Annex I of
the directive.
Annex I of the Birds Directive lists 192 species and sub-species
It is comprised of:
-
species in danger of extinction;
-
species vulnerable to specific changes
in their habitat;
-
species considered rare because of small
populations or restricted local distribution;
-
other species requiring particular attention
for reasons of the specific nature of habitat.
For these species Member States have a particular
duty to classify their most suitable territories in number
and size as Special Protection Areas.
This guide is intended to provide you with an introduction
to each of the Annex I bird species. It includes a species
description and illustrations, a distribution map as well
as information on major threats to the species.
