Fifth Regional Workshop presentations are online

On 12-14 October 2017 the Fifth Regional Workshop of the Platform took place in Venzone, Italy. Around 30 speakers presented their findings of their conservation projects, research on and experiences with large carnivores. The presentation slides can be found here.

Online Newsletter

An online-newsletter describing the platform work can be downloaded here (pdf) and read in html here. The Platform aims to produce a newsletter twice a year in order to update those interested in their work on their activities.

8 - 10 June 2017 - Regional Workshop in Romania

The fourth Regional Workshop of the EU Platform on Coexistence between People and Large Carnivores took place in Bucharest, Romania, organised by FACE and WWF and their national members General Association of Romanian Hunters & Anglers (AGVPS) and WWF Romania. The participants of the workshop shared good practices in large carnivore management and communication between different stakeholders in Romania and discussed the current situation with large carnivore management. At the end of the workshop, the participants agreed the following statement (en) (ro).



1 June 2017 - Plenary Meeting

The Platform's annual Plenary Meeting took place in Brussels on 1 June. Items on the agenda included the presentation of the case studies analysis and reflections on joint work with regional platforms. A press release from the meeting including a statement on large carnivore management in Romania was agreed.

May 2017 – New leaflet on use of the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD)

A study commissioned by the EU Large Carnivore Platform, showed that a number of EAFRD measures are already used to support coexistence, particularly the provision of fencing and livestock guarding dogs. However many Member States where large carnivores are present, do not take up this opportunity and there is great potential to use this funding source more widely for a wider range of innovative actions. For more information, see the Platform Rural Development web-page where the report and a leaflet translated into a range of languages is available.

7 February 2017 – Case studies updated on website

Further case studies have been added to this page. The Platform members are now selecting a subset of these case studies to analyse further in 2017.


November 2016


24 November 2016 - Kick-off meeting for the secretarial support

The kick-off meeting for the contractors providing secretarial support to the Platform (adelphi consult and Callisto) took place on 24 November 2016. At the meeting, the Platform members agreed the focus of the secretariat’s work for the coming year. This will include further analysis of case studies to identify transferable good practice as well as support with regional workshops and the plenary meeting.

4 October 2016

As part of their work gathering case study examples, the Platform has been examining potential funding sources for good practice. Case studies have highlighted that Rural Development support is a potential source of EU funding that is not fully exploited by Member States. The Platform decided to carry out further investigation into the area and commissioned a report which was presented at their annual meeting. The report is available on the Platform website. New case studies have also been added to this page. Further analysis of the case studies is planned for 2017.

30 May 2016 – Plenary Meeting in Brussels

The Plenary meeting of the Platform took place 30 May 2016 in Brussels. Representatives from members of the EU Platform on Coexistence between People and Large Carnivores met to discuss their work over the previous year and their future plans. A particular focus of the meeting was good practice for coexistence and how this can be funded through the rural development programmes. More information is available here.

18 - 20 April 2016 - Regional Workshop in Germany

The third Regional Workshop of the EU Platform on Coexistence between People and Large Carnivores tooks place in Berlin, Germany. It was organised by the platform member WWF and hosted by NABU (BirdLife Germany), focusing on “Large Carnivores in Central Europe: Experiences in Monitoring, Management, and Communication”. 6 November 2015 - Contract kick-off Meeting

The kick-off meeting for the renewed contract providing technical support to the Platform (adelphi and Callisto) took place on 6 November in Brussels. During this meeting, the focus of the contractors’ support for the following year was discussed and agreed. Members were asked for their ideas about how the work of the Platform could best be taken forward and about practical methods of working together.

30 October 2015 - New information on large carnivores available

Further case studies have been uploaded which document how originally conflictual situations have been resolved. These demonstrate lessons learned in one location which can be applied in other situations or other Member States. Additional best-practices are available in the library including reports produced by Platform members. All information will be continiously updated.




8 October 2015 - Regional Workshop in Finland

The second regional workshop in Rovaniemi, Lapland, Finland, has been organised in cooperation with the Finnish Reindeer Herders’ Association. The workshop focussed on socio-economic aspects of coexistence in Finland and neighboring countries. More information is available here.

24 - 26 September - NABU Conference: Get InWolfed! International Wolf Conference

Scientists, politicians and practitioners from Europe and North America gave an insight into their experience with wildlife management and discussed practices that could make daily life with wolves easier and reduce the potential for conflict. The presentations from the conference are now available on the NABU website.


August 2015


8 October 2015 - Regional Workshop in Finland

As agreed at the 2nd Annual Meeting, the Reindeer Herders’ Association is organising a regional workshop in Rovaniemi, Lapland, Finland. The workshop will focus on socio-economic aspects of coexistence between people and large carnivores. More information will be added shortly.



11 August 2015 - New information on large carnivores available

The FAQ page now provides answers to 21 frequently asked questions. Further information can be drawn from case studies which document how original conflictual situations have been resolved. These demonstrate lessons learned in one location which can be applied in other situations or other Member States. Additional best-practices are available in the library including reports of the Platform members. All information is going to be continiously updated.

19 March 2015 - Regional Workshop in Bulgaria

The Platform’s first workshop was hosted by the International Council of Game and Wildlife Conservation (CIC) in conjunction with their General Assembly at the same venue in Pravets, Bulgaria. The workshop focused on the key topics of importance to the Platform with a regional focus on relevant issues in the Balkans and the Carpathians. 19 March 2015 - Kick-off meeting for technical support contract

The European Commission has provided technical support to the Platform through a contract to adelphi and Callisto. The kick-off meeting for the project, attended by the European Commission, the Platform members and the contractors was held 1 December 2014.

Representatives from the Platform member organisations discussed how to take forward their work programme. The contract provides assistance with developing communication materials and case studies for the Platform and assistance organising events.


February 2015


19 February 2015 - Response from Platform members

The Platform members responded to Copa-Cogeca’s announcement by asking them to continue working together on the Platform. See their response for further information.




13 February 2015 - Copa-Cogeca announced their resignation from the Platform and are currently not participating in Platform activities.




04 February 2015 - New documents on large carnivores available

Key actions for Large Carnivore populations in Europe, prepared by Boitani et al. under contract for the European Commission has just been published. The technical report covers the most urgent actions necessary at the population level for four species of large carnivore protected under the EU’s Habitats Directive.

1 December 2014 - European Commission grants technical support contract to assist the work of the Platform

The contractors will provide support in gathering information on solutions to conflicts and aiding with communication and event organisation. The kick off meeting for the contract was held 1 December 2014.




1 December 2014 - Meeting of the Platform core group

The Platform core group met in Brussels in March to discuss their work plan, means of working together and upcoming tasks. The organisation of the workshop and plenary session were discussed. In addition, Platform Members provided updates on their current activities of relvance to the Platform’s work together.


June 2014


10 June 2014 - First working session

The European Commission hosted the launch event and the first working session of the EU platform on Coexistence between People and Large Carnivores in the Committee of the Regions (CoR), Brussels.

High-level representatives of eight stakeholder organizations signed an agreement on the key principles of engagement in the activities of the Platform, under the auspices of Commissioner Janez Potočnik.

Ms Pia Bucella co-chaired the meeting on behalf of DG Environment. Mr. Thierry d’Escaille of ELO was elected as co-chair for the first two years (represented by Ms. Delphine Dupeux at the meeting).
