Since the launch of the LIFE programme by the European Commission in 1992, a total of 795 projects have been co-financed in Italy. Of these, 477 focused on environmental innovation, 280 on nature conservation and biodiversity, 17 on information and communication and two on NGOs (operating grants). Under the new LIFE programme (see below), one integrated project, eight Climate Change Adaptation projects,  seven Climate Change Mitigation projects, two Climate Governance and Information project as well as one have been co-financed in Italy by the EU. These projects represent a total investment of €1.2 billion, of which €570 million has been contributed by the EU.

Since 2014, the traditional LIFE projects have been accompanied by a new sub-programme for Climate Action (focusing on Climate Change Mitigation, Climate Change Adaptation, and Climate Governance and Information). The new LIFE programme has also been expanded to include several new types of projects - integrated, technical assistance, capacity-building and preparatory projects, and operating grants - as well as two new financial instruments, the Natural Capital Financing Facility (NCFF) and the Private Finance for Energy Efficiency (PF4EE) tool.
