Basis of EU-Mexico Cooperation
Mexico signed an Economic Partnership, Political Coordination and Cooperation Agreement with the EU in 1997. The Agreement covers political dialogue, trade relations and cooperation.
Since 2008 Mexico is one of the EU's strategic partners. This extended the scope of the dialogue and deepened cooperation between both partners. A bilateral high-level dialogue was established to strengthen cooperation specifically on environmental matters.
The EU-Mexico Environmental Dialogue
The EU-Mexico High Level Dialogue on Environment covers themes of mutual interest including: the conservation and sustainable management of natural resources, biodiversity, international environmental governance, sustainable production and consumption, urban environment, and chemicals/pesticides.
The most recent and 6th meeting convened in Mexico City in April 2015. This High Level Dialogue on Environment (HLD) covers a range of issues of mutual interest including: the conservation and sustainable management of natural resources, biodiversity, forests, international environmental governance, sustainable production and consumption, urban environment and chemicals/pesticides. The HLD has proven useful in fostering closer contacts with SEMARNAT by identifying further areas for collaboration and by encouraging Mexico’s support in multilateral fora.
