Bilateral and regional cooperation

The Commission also cooperates with third countries bilaterally and within the scope of multilateral fora to bolster environmental standards and enforcement methods. For example, a number of high-level bilateral dialogues on environment already take place, including with Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, India, Japan, Russia and the United States. Efforts are also underway to establish similar mechanisms with Mexico and South Africa. Environment cooperation is also an integral feature of regional and sub-regional dialogue processes in which the EU is engaged, for instance the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) and the EU-ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) partnership. The EU is also a strong promoter of dialogue and cooperation on environment and sustainable development in the context of multilateral processes such as the G8 and OECD.
