The Commission provides funding to projects and initiatives that promote its policy priorities throughout the European Union and further afield. The Directorate-General for Environment makes funding available through the LIFE programme and occasionally, some pilot projects and/or preparatory actions on Environmental policy included annually in the EU budget.

LIFE also finances some grants for non-governmental organisations active in the field of the environment because they are key players in the development and implementation of environmental policy. They are important channels of information on the concerns citizens have on the environment and they contribute to raise citizens' awareness on specific environmental issues and policies.
