7th European Conference on Sustainable Cities and Towns
17th – 19th April 2013, Geneva, Switzerland
ICLEI Europe and the ESCT Preparatory Committee are organising the 7th European Conference on Sustainable Cities and Towns to be hosted by the City of Geneva this April. The conference will focus on governance and finance for sustainable development. Sessions will look into long-lasting solutions to the environmental, economic and social crises Europe is facing today and the role local governments can and should play. The conference provides a valuable opportunity for local and national governments, UN and European institutions, as well as businesses, researchers and NGOs to present, discuss and exchange best practices and experiences. It will provide a platform to foster critical and creative thinking, promoting sustainable development solutions at all levels.
The conference comes at a time when widespread attention is being paid to the exemplary role of local governments in sustainable development. This is partly driven by the urgent need to find lasting solutions to both financial and environmental crises. During the three-day conference, plenary sessions featuring high level speakers, interactive breakout sessions and workshops on-site showing the latest innovative activities in urban sustainability will take place. Participants will have the opportunity to be part of an event that will mark a milestone for Europe’s local governments in their quest to achieve sustainable communities.
The European Green Capital Award promotes the important role that local government plays in improving the environment and rewards their high level of commitment to genuine sustainable growth. Each year the award is given to a city that has a consistent record of achieving high environmental standards, is committed to ongoing and ambitious goals for further environmental improvement and sustainable development and can act as a role model to inspire other cities and promote best practice.
