The European Green Capital Award Handover Ceremony

The European Commission will officially hand over the “European Green Capital” title from Copenhagen, Denmark, to Bristol, UK at a prestigious ceremony in Copenhagen on Monday, 8th December 2014.

The ceremony will mark the handover of the title and also provide an opportunity for cities to meet and discuss the importance of green and circular economy in sustainable cities, the successes that the European Green Capital Award has brought about and the challenges they face throughout Europe.

This exciting event will mark the sixth year of the European Green Capital initiative, which rewards cities that are making efforts to improve the urban environment and move towards healthier and sustainable living areas. The winning cities to date include: Stockholm 2010, Hamburg 2011, Vitoria-Gasteiz 2012, Nantes 2013, Copenhagen 2014, Bristol 2015 and Ljubljana 2016. All are recognised for their consistent record of achieving high environmental standards and commitment to ambitious goals.

Speakers on the day will include the new EU Environment Commissioner Karmenu Vella, Director-General for Environment Karl Falkenberg, George Ferguson the Mayor of Bristol – the 2015 European Green Capital and Mayor Morten Kabell, Technical and Environmental Administration, Copenhagen.

This year Bristol, UK will receive the title of European Green Capital 2015. Bristol is the first UK city to win the European Green Capital Award. Bristol won not just because of its plans for the future, but because of the city-wide efforts Bristol people and businesses are already making towards creating Britain’s most liveable city. The 2015 European Green Capital programme focuses on three important themes: Learning, Innovation and Leadership. Bristol’s programme will reach every neighbourhood and be as inclusive as possible.
