Covenant of Mayors and Mayors Adapt Ceremony

A new Covenant of Mayors will be launched in Brussels, Belgium on 15th October 2015. This is a high-level event which will incorporate joint ceremonies for the Covenant of Mayors and Mayors Adapt. It will involve representatives from towns and cities across Europe who are leading the way on climate change mitigation and adaptation.

The event will be split into a morning and evening session. The first session will consist of the Covenant of Mayors and Mayors Adapt Ceremony, while the second will involve an ‘Information event on Climate Change’.

The new Covenant of Mayors is a follow-up to a recent consultation conducted by the Covenant of Mayors Office with the support of the Committee of the Regions. The aim of the ceremony is to invite city representatives to sign up to a post-2020 Covenant which includes:

  • A new target of at least 40% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030;
  • Mitigation and adaptation pillars through integration of the Covenant of Mayors and Mayors Adapt and;
  • A global scope, opening up participation to local authorities worldwide.

At the first session, speeches will be delivered by key members of the European Parliament. There will be presentations, panel discussions, as well as a networking lunch. This will be followed by the afternoon session.
