11th– 22nd November 2013, Warsaw, Poland
The nineteenth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the 9th Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to Kyoto Protocol will take place from Monday 11th November to Friday 22nd November 2013 at National Stadium in Warsaw, Poland. The COP is the supreme decision-making body of the UNFCCC, which was drawn up in 1992. It is an international treaty between cooperating countries that have pledged to work together to limit average global temperature increases and the resulting climate change, and to cope with whatever impacts were, by then, inevitable. Furthermore, the COP assesses the progress on States in achieving their objectives from the Convention in Bonn.
H.E. Marcin Korolec, Minister for the Environment in Poland, will assume the Presidency of the UNFCCC process on the first day of COP 19 and will hold it throughout 2014 until COP 20.
Every year the COP brings together government delegations headed by the Ministers for the Environment or Climate Change, international institutions, environmental, business and research non-governmental organisations and media.
The EU member states and many European countries are party to the Convention. As a result, the objectives from the Convention have a strong influence on European green cities in their efforts towards attaining the European Green Capital Award.
