Citizenship for Sustainability

3rd – 5th July, Cascais, Portugal

From 3rd to 5th of July in Cascais (Portugal), the International Observatory on Participatory Democracy (IOPD), will be holding the 13th Annual International Conference of the IOPD under the theme “Citizenship for Sustainability” at the Estoril Congress Center. The IOPD is a network of cities, associations, organisations and research centres from across the world, created in 2011 within the framework of the European Commission’s URB-AL programme for decentralised cooperation. The network provides a space for the production of knowledge, boosting the exchange of useful experiences for the towns and cities connected.

The main aim of the conference is to highlight citizenship as a tool available for citizens to participate in building a more sustainable world, showcasing sustainability as a political concern that gives back citizens their right to participate in a society that manages its resources responsibly is another element. This year there will be a special focus on best practices in participatory democracy and sustainability.

The conference will also integrate the 5th GLOCAL Conference, “Think Global, Act Local”, adding to the debate the issues of Sustainability and Local Agenda 21. Several workshops and technical visits are also scheduled during the three-day event. The full programme of the event is available here.

The European Green Capital Award initiative

The European Green Capital Award was conceived as an initiative to promote and reward the important role that local authorities play in improving the environment, and their high level of commitment to sustainable development. Since 2010, one European city has been selected each year as the European Green Capital of the year.

The city that is chosen as the European Green Capital will be a city that demonstrates a well-established record of achieving high environmental standards and is committed to achieving ongoing and ambitious goals for future environmental improvement and sustainable development.
