Wetlands, Water Management and the European Green Capital Award

Vitoria- Gasteiz, the European Green Capital in 2012, provides a fantastic example of recovered wetlands, which are recognised now as Ramsar Wetland of International Importance and also as a European Natura 2000 Network site. These wetlands are located just 2km away from the city centre. Earlier in the 20th century, the marshes of this area were drained for agricultural purposes, but restored in the 1990s to create two lakes. Inside a Natural Park, the Salburua Wetlands play an important role, in terms of water retention to prevent flooding of the nearby city, water quality treatment as well as achieving overall water management objectives.

The Salburua Wetlands – home to endangered species such as European mink – seen from the air.

Water is one of Europe’s most vital resources and the appropriate management of it is essential for the continued protection of the resource. The city that is chosen as the 2015 European Green Capital will be a city that demonstrates, as Vitoria-Gasteiz did, a well-established record of achieving high environmental standards and is committed to achieving ongoing and ambitious goals for future environmental improvement and sustainable development.
