The Sixth World Urban Forum

1st – 7th September 2012, Naples, Italy

This year Naples will host the sixth World Urban Forum. The event is organised jointly by UN-Habitat, the Government of Italy the Campania Region and the City of Naples and will run from the 1st to the 7th of September. This year’s theme is The Urban Future and over 3,000 participants from 114 countries have already registered.

The World Urban Forum was established by the UN in response to the pressing issue of rapid urbanisation and its impact on communities, cities, economies, climate change and policies. The spread of urban areas is putting an extreme pressure on natural resources and urban infrastructure. This forum has identified a number of issues that need to be explored in order to achieve a sustainable future for urban areas.

Regulations for urban planning and the institutions that are responsible will be examined over the two day course and participants will discuss ideas that could improve the established processes. The Forum will also look at how a city can impact on the lives of its citizens. The quality of life of citizens, distribution of wealth and opportunities has been recognised by the UN-Habitat as areas that need improvement and will be discussed. Participants will also spend some time on urban mobility, energy and environment.

The World Urban Forum has been described as one of the most open and inclusive gatherings of its kind on the international stage. Sustainable urban areas is at the route of the European Green Capital and the knowledge and ideas shared at the World Urban Forum will no doubt be of value to all European cities.
