The European Green Capital Award Handover Event 2012 to 2013

29th November 2012, Brussels, Belgium

The European Commission will officially hand over the “European Green Capital” title from Vitoria-Gasteiz in Spain, to Nantes in France at a prestigious event in Brussels on Thursday, 29 November 2012. The event will celebrate the hand over of the title and also provide an opportunity for cities to meet and discuss the importance of sustainable cities, the successes that the European Green Capital Award has brought about and the challenges they face throughout Europe.

This exciting event will mark the fourth year of the European Green Capital initiative, which recognises the important position local authorities play in improving the environment. With three out of four people living in urban areas throughout Europe today, promoting and showcasing best practice in cities is an excellent way to exchange ideas, strike up “friendly competition” and provide inspiration for green growth.

This year Nantes, France will receive the title of European Green Capital 2013. Nantes has seen success through the introduction of electric tramways, a high quality bus service (with 80% of the fleet running on natural gas) and a growing bicycle infrastructure. Similar to Vitoria-Gasteiz, such initiatives have resulted in an impressive modal switch. In only 8 years (2000 to 2008), Nantes saw a 36% increase in urban transport use, making public transport the local choice for over 50% of journeys today.

Speakers on the day will include the EU Environment Commissioner Janez Potočnik, Javier Maroto the Mayor of Vitoria-Gasteiz- the 2012 European Green Capital, Patrick Rimbert the Mayor of Nantes and Vice-president of EUROCITIES and Gilles Retière the President of Nantes Métropole. More speakers will be announced soon.
