Port Cities as Hotspots of Creative and Sustainable Local Development
1st – 2nd September, Naples, Italy
The city of Naples will host this year’s conference on Port Cities as Hotspots of Creative and Sustainable Local Development on the 1st and 2nd of September. The conference is being held by the University of Naples, with partners such as UN Habitat, Habitat Universities and Urban Campaign.
Port cities are the centre of much industry and economic development, but also of abundant biodiversity and social amenities. Their prosperity does not just lie in their marine traffic but also in their unique ecosystems and in the quality of life of their citizens. This conference aims to look at the challenges faced by port cities in terms of balancing their economic needs with their social and environmental needs.
Over the two day conference speakers from universities and associated groups will present their papers. The discussion will be focused on 9 goals covering planning, finance, players and best practices. Plenary groups will draw up a final document on the ideas and strategies proposed. This document will then be discussed on the 4th of September.
At its centre, Port Cities as Hotspots of Creative and Sustainable Local Development believes that cities are not simply engines of economic progress but areas where people live that are rich in culture and history that should be celebrated. The conference aims to show that the conflict between the two mentalities can be eased through creative thinking and that both private and public interests can be satisfied.
The European Green Capital Award believes in sustainable development that benefits the citizens both economically and socially. Several of the European Green Capitals have been Port Cities, including Stockholm, Hamburg and next year’s title holder- Nantes. They have all proven that preservation of the historical and cultural aspects of the city is tantamount to the sentiments of the Award.
