The main aim of the exhibition is to raise awareness of the importance of preserving our natural environment. The title of the exhibition features the National Geographic motto of “Inspiring people to care about the planet”. As well as being organised in conjunction with the National Geographic the exhibition was also organised in order to support of the recent efforts of Slovenian ecologists in cleaning up the country from illegal rubbish dumping.

The exhibition will be running until the 15th of December so there is still plenty of time to get there and see these beautiful images in a beautiful setting!

Ljubljana is one of eight cities, from six countries, that will compete for the 2015 European Green Capital title. It will be Ljubljana’s third attempt to claim the title. The selection of a city to be awarded the European Green Capital for 2015 will be assessed on the basis of twelve environmental indicators:

  • Climate change
  • Local transport
  • Green urban areas incorporating sustainable land use
  • Nature and biodiversity
  • Quality of local ambient air
  • Quality of the Acoustic Environment
  • Waste production and management
  • Water consumption
  • Waste water treatment
  • Eco innovation and sustainable employment
  • Environmental management of the local authority
  • Energy performance

A panel of internationally acknowledged Experts will assess the technical information supplied by each city. This will include qualitative evaluations and a peer review of each application based on the 12 indicators above.

Following these assessments, a number of cities will be shortlisted for the 2015 title. The shortlisted cities will be invited to present their action plans and communication strategies to the Jury.

Following these presentations the Jury will deliberate and the European Green Capital 2015 will be announced at an award ceremony in June 2013 in Nantes, the European Green Capital 2013..
