Local Authorities Energy Day

19th March 2013, Ghent, Belgium

06.03.13 energy dayThe 2nd Energy Day for Local Authorities will be hosted by Ghent, Belgium this month. The event invites policy makers, officials and anyone involved in aspects of energy policy and energy management to come together to focus on working towards a sustainable energy policy.

Topics on the day will include a local vision of sustainability, low-energy buildings, savings in building management, lighting of public spaces, sustainable neighbourhoods and energy techniques. The aim of the event is to move towards smart cities, with electric cars, bikes and sustainable local mobility policies a key topic. Current developments and how these can be translated into local practice will be presented with a focus on concrete examples of what pioneer local areas have achieved to date. Such examples can be seen in practice with study visits organised throughout Ghent. In addition, Mayors of European cities will meet during the event at a Covenant of Mayors Roundtable discussion.

Energy is undoubtedly becoming an important area for local authorities, with European countries aiming to achieve more sustainable policies, reduce CO2 emissions, increase renewable energy and improve energy efficiency.

The European Green Capital Award recognises the important role that local authorities play in improving the environment and provides an incentive for cities to inspire each other and share best practices. Applicants for the award are assessed by an Expert Panel and shortlisted cities are invited to present their vision, action plan and communication strategy to the Jury. Energy performance is one of 12 environmental indicators assessed.

Brussels, Belgium is one of the applicants for the 2015 European Green Capital Award. The winner will be announced in June in the 2013 European Green Capital, Nantes.
