4th International Disaster and Risk Conference (IDRC)

The International Disaster and Risk Conference is a biennial conference that attempts to find solutions to today’s challenges in managing risks, reducing disasters and adapting to climate change. This year’s conference is titled “Integrative Risk Management in a Changing World”.

The evidence of climate change cannot be ignored. The global society has experienced an increase in extreme weather events that have resulted in the destruction of infrastructure and loss of lives. Societies need to start facing this threat and equipping themselves for potential events.

The IDRC brings together risk management experts, practitioners, scientists, key players from civil society, Non-Governmental Organisations and the private sector in an attempt to bridge the gap between the causes of problems, governance and technology. The diversity of participants allows a strategic and operational level of discussion in order to obtain the best solutions for resilience. The IDRC promotes sustainable solutions through a combination of practice, science, policy and decision making.

The European Green Capital Award acknowledges the efforts made by cities in their attempt to become green. However sustainability is closely connected to resilience and while the objective of the European Green Capital is to reduce its adverse affects on the environment it is essential that cities also seek to protect themselves against the environmental forces already in play. The IDRC is intent on bringing “thoughts to action” and will no doubt result in positive changes for European green cities.
