ICLEI World Congress 2012

14th-17th June, Belo Horizonte, Brasil

The beautiful city of Belo Horizonte will host this year’s ICLEI World Congress from the 14th to the 17th of June. ICLEI is made of local government members dedicated to sustainable development. The four day event will be attended by Mayors from over 1200 cities, towns and counties worldwide. Among those attending will be a representative from Vitoria-Gasteiz, the current holder the European Green Capital Title.

ICLEI holds a world congress every three years to provide an opportunity for local governments to showcase their actions over the period and to discuss strategies and for the following years.  The congress will have eight agendas for sustainable cities that will be discussed on the day. These include:

  • Green urban economy
  • Sustainable city
  • Resource-efficient city
  • Biodiverse city
  • Low-carbon city
  • Resilient community and city
  • Green urban infrastructure
  • Healthy & happy community

Like the European Green Capital, the sentiment of the ICLEI World Congress 2012 is that green cities should share best practices and learn from each others success. Both see the importance of creating cities that are green, sustainable and have a competitive edge to ensure long term prosperity.
