Green Capital Bird Banding

4th October – 27th December 2012, Vitoria-Gasteiz

This year’s European Green Capital Vitoria-Gasteiz is hosting a bird banding event that will span over 3 months, beginning in October. Bird banding (or bird ringing) is essential to bird conservation, and the banding of millions of birds annually worldwide contributes greatly to the study of birds’ habits that can lead to a greater understanding of their needs. Bird banding involves attaching a small metal or plastic band around a bird’s leg in order to identify individual birds from the band’s unique number.

The project is one selected by the CEA in the framework of the European Green Capital 2012. Everyone is invited to participate in workshops on bird banding in Salburua Park. The workshops are run by the Association for Txepetxa. These workshops give the participants a unique insight into the process and the environmental education associated with it.

Workshops are 2 hours long from 9 to 11 am and are on the following dates:

  • October: 4, 11, 18, 23, 27 and 30
  • November: 8, 11, 15, 16, 22, 26 and 29
  • December: 2, 4, 13, 20 and 27

Nature and biodiversity are key factors in the European Green Capital Award. By learning more about the native environment, policies makers will be able to better nurture growth and ensure that native birds and wildlife are safe and secure.
