International EWWR Conference and Awards Ceremony 2012

19th – 20th June 2012, Paris, France

In 2009 the Life+ project launched the European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR) which is in its third and final year. The aim of the week is to educate people on waste prevention techniques that can be adapted at home, school, work etc. This year’s International EWWR Conference in Paris will mark the end of the project and will focus on the achievements lessons learnt over the three years. At the end of the first day awards will be granted for the most outstanding EWWR actions carried out in 5 different categories:

  • Administration/public authority
  • Association/NGO
  • Business/industry
  • Educational establishment
  • Other (for example hospital, retirement home, cultural institution…)

There will also be a special award granted by the jury. Nearly 100 actions nominated by the national and regional EWWR organisers are in the running for the prizes. Closing remarks will be given by European Commissioner for the Environment Janez Potočnik via video-link.

On the second day the French Environment and Energy Management Agency (ADEME) will run a technical day highlighting the issues faced by local and regional authorities regarding waste prevention.

Waste reduction cuts costs from more efficient use of raw materials, packaging and technology. It is boasts environmental benefits with less energy being consumed both in production and less products end up in landfills. As a result waste management practices are one of the factors examined by the European Green Capital Award.

One of the criteria examined by the European Green Capital judging panel is waste reduction
