COP 18

26th November – 7th December 2012, Doha

The eighteenth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 18) will take place from Monday, 26 November to Friday, 7 December 2012 at the Qatar National Convention Centre in Doha, Qatar. The COP is the supreme decision-making body of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The UNFCCC was drawn in 1992. It is an international treaty between cooperating countries that have pledged to work together to limit average global temperature increases and the resulting climate change, and to cope with whatever impacts were, by then, inevitable.

The COP assess the progress on States in achieving the objection of the Convention. To do this the national communications and emissions inventories of each party are reviewed and the effects of the measures that they have taken to ensure their progress are assessed. Every year the COP gathers representatives of all the states that are parties to the Convention in Bonn. The first COP meeting was held in Berlin, Germany in March 1995.

The EU member states and many European countries are party to the Convention. As a result the objections of the Convention have a strong influence on European green cities in their efforts towards attaining the European Green Capital Award.
